Students can sometimes attempt to access a blocked website by using a web-based proxy. There are many available, and students can use these proxy websites to insert a website’s address into a box on the proxy website and access it via the proxy.
Block Proxies
GoGuardian has categorized thousands of websites. To block sites that have been categorized as a proxy, please navigate to a policy, select website categories and check the Proxy category under Malicious Sites.
In addition to category blocks, GoGuardian recognizes that new sites are created daily that have not been categorized. We have created an algorithm to detect a proxy based on the page itself rather than the URL: Smart Rules.
Smart Rules
Smart Rules are powered by GoGuardian's machine learning algorithm. Our system uses millions of browsing events and input from thousands of admins to learn how to filter content dynamically, regardless of website URL. Custom Rules will take priority over Smart Rules.
When toggled, sites that are determined to be Web Proxies will be blocked automatically. Our Smart Rule for Web Proxies has caught over 500,000 sites and is growing steadily.
